About Don Heist

KWPB's first radio volunteer, Don brings lots of new music and insight in contemporary worship to the Lord.

Don and his wife Sharon both actively serve at the Yaquina Bay Chapel in Newport.  Don is the Pastor there.  He also serves as a Chairman for Inter Christian Outreach.  The Heists are also working to establish the "City Gates" Bookmobile.

Bob Potts, Sr. Pastor, doesn't think that Don should be pictured wearing a suit.

GOD'S Miracle In My Life

Because He is alive I Live! How true are the words to that song in my life. I had already been dabbling in drugs and alcohol for a couple years before I gave my life to the Lord at age 15 in a church youth group. But after a few months our youth group leader was fired. I know now that many of us had our eyes on her and not Jesus, but I became angry and decided men were hypocrites and did not know what they were doing. I decided to not go to church and just worship God on my own. What happened next was as the Bible says: But when you follow your own wrong inclinations your lives will produce these evil results: impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, spiritualism (that is, encouraging the activity of demons), hatred and fighting, jealousy and anger, constant effort to get the best for yourself, complaints and criticisms,... "Gal. 5:19-20

Well after 10 years I had been through about the whole list. At 17 I was using drugs and alcohol heavily, had run away several times, tried to commit suicide, was spending weekends in jail for armed robbery, had my drivers license suspended and my girlfriend was pregnant. I joined the Army and we got married. I was very angry at God that I was still on this earth. At 25, I was stuck in the bottom of a very deep pit. I went back to my parents house with nothing left but one broken marriage, two children (that I knew of), one duffle bag and the Lord Jesus telling me it was time to become aware. While staying at my parents I learned that Jesus still loved me, He wanted me to follow and He could still use me.

I thought all I had to do was quit drinking, drugs, be good and become aware. Then I could come to God. Little did I understand God had already come to me as Jesus and I could meet Him as I was. For a year I tried and tried to quit drinking and be good (even by moving to another state) but I failed and failed again. Then when talking to a pastor I discovered I had to decide who to love more -alcohol or Jesus. Later I went to the altar of a church to get prayer because I decided I loved Jesus more and then I was delivered from alcohol and was given a thirst for the Word of God. Thirty years and most of it an uphill battle, but God has been faithful and helped me every step of the way. He has been faithful all these years EVEN THOUGH I have not. As another song says, "Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow" (with joy & love).

Thank you Jesus!                                                                                                            Don Heist
